Stone floors can usually be restored. They need the right treatment
Stone floors go dull and grey for all sorts of reasons. Worn sealers, ingrained dirt, scratches, traffic lanes, acidic spills, limescale, cleaning product residue, general wear. None of it is unusual, and most of it can be put right.
The catch is that marble, limestone, travertine, slate, terracotta and quarry tiles all need a different approach. Some floors just need a deep clean and a fresh sealer. Others need honing, polishing or more detailed restoration to bring them back.

Soft, porous and acid-sensitive. Cleaning, honing and a quality sealer usually transform a tired limestone floor.
Travertine
Cleaning, hole filling with matching paste, honing and resealing where appropriate.
Marble
Honing and polishing to remove etching and dullness. We assess each floor before quoting a finish.
Slate
Stripping of old sealers and wax, deep cleaning, then resealing with a finish that suits how the room is used.
Terracotta
Careful cleaning to protect the natural colour, followed by a breathable seal or wax depending on the floor.
Quarry tiles
Old residues stripped and the tile brought back, then sealed for everyday use.

Can my stone floor be restored?
Usually, yes. Most natural stone floors can be improved, but the right method depends on the stone, the condition and what’s already on it. Send us a few photos and we’ll be straight about what’s realistic.
Can you remove stains from stone?
Many stains can be reduced or removed, but not all. Wine, oil, rust and pet stains often improve a lot. Anything that’s soaked deep into the stone may always leave a faint shadow.
Will the floor be slippery after polishing?
A polished stone floor is smoother but shouldn’t be unsafe in normal use. For bathrooms or commercial floors we’d usually recommend a satin or honed finish rather than a high polish.
Do I need to move the furniture?
The rooms we’re working in need to be cleared. If that’s tricky, talk to us first and we’ll work something out.
Does stone need sealing?
Most natural stone benefits from a sealer. It slows down staining and makes day-to-day cleaning easier. The right sealer depends on the stone and the room.
Can you clean grout as well?
Yes. Grout cleaning is usually part of the job. Heavily stained or failed grout can be improved but won’t always come back even.
What is the difference between cleaning, honing and polishing?
Cleaning lifts dirt and old residues from the surface. Honing uses fine abrasives to flatten wear and remove light scratches. Polishing takes it further on stones like marble to bring back a smoother, more reflective finish.
Can you remove acid etching from marble or limestone?
Etching usually needs honing and polishing rather than cleaning. Light etching often comes out well. Deep etching can be improved but not always erased completely.
How long does stone floor restoration take?
Most domestic jobs take one to four days. Depends on the stone, the condition, the size of the area and any drying times for sealer.
How long before I can walk on the floor?
Usually a couple of hours for light foot traffic in socks. Heavy use and rugs are best left a few days. We’ll give you exact timings on the day.
How often should a stone floor be resealed?
Anywhere from two to seven years, depending on the stone, the sealer and how busy the floor is. We’ll tell you what to look out for.
How much does stone floor restoration cost?
